SISTERS' Tale

A FEATURE ANIMATION FILM IN DEVELOPMENT

In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, A blooming cherry tree.

The Tale of Sisters

A woman tries to forgive her sister, but will she be able to forgive herself?

Years ago, my own sister was going through some troubled times. We, as a family had some down moments that had left deep traces in our family history and that we couldn’t understand for a long time. I’ve started to search for the answers to the questions that my family had. I was desperately seeking people like myself. I was looking for a mother that would tell my mom her own story: “Hey, I was there, just like you. You will be fine.” This inconclusive search made me passionate about making a film about people with real stories: Marginalized and prejudiced - what are the intersection points of these women’s lives? “Womanhood” and thereby “sisterhood“ are matters that I have dealt with for many years.

SISTERS’ TALE is a feature-length animation for adults and young adults inspired by real stories selected from an archive of sisters’ testimonies. Facebook group “Sisters’ Tale” served as venues for building a community and collecting authentic narratives of sisters, who have experienced outside the box experiences.

The structure of Sisters’ Tale is inspired from the structure of the book One Thousand and One Nights as well as the feature animation films the Prophet: Kahlil Gibran (2014). The main components of the project are four short films and the main story to which they are linked in a meaningful way. The story contains the fairy tale elements that actually form the backbone of the film.

SISTERS’ TALE is an original and special project as it brings together different narratives and narrators focusing on women’s stories, and in particular is an adult animation which is a niche genre. There is mainly no or little dialogue, nevertheless, music is one of the core elements of the film since some key scenes are musical.

The art management, visual narrative technique and texture of each story will be unique, but common motifs and permeability are cared for to connect the stories visually and in terms of content. It will be reflected throughout the film as a polyphonic harmonic structure with diversity and inclusiveness as a product of collective work
